Pudong New Area will invest more than 4 billion yuan (US$585million) to clean up around its streets and buildings before the 2010 Shanghai World Expo, government officials said yesterday.
The district will intensify efforts to improve the environment in Sanlin area ?? where about two-thirds of the Expo pavilions will be located ?? and its surrounding areas.
Major traffic routes to the airport and the Expo site will also be included on the upgrade list. Rules will be strictly enforced against illegal vendors and illegal street-side construction.
A total of 159 roads will be redeveloped, and 330 rivers will be dredged. More than 5,000 store signboards and 10,000 outdoor advertising boards will be upgraded to meet standards.
More than 200 square meters in 25 old neighborhoods will be reconstructed.
All roofs will be modified from flat to sloping, and the exterior appearance of buildings will be refreshed.
"We want to realize the theme of the Expo - better city, better life - by improving the quality of our citizens' lives," said Wu Fukang, head of Pudong's Environmental Protection and Sanitation Management Bureau.
